Why the Choice of Castor Wheels Is Important in the Healthcare Business

If you are responsible for ordering equipment for use in a healthcare establishment, then you know that there are a lot of specific rules and regulations to consider, as well as best practices. When it comes to a lot of the equipment that is movable, you may know that castor wheels are the ideal solution for their transportation. However, while these wheels are renowned for their flexibility and reliability, only certain types are best for use in the healthcare field. What types should be considered?

Delicate Environment

There is a reason for the raft of regulations that cover equipment in the healthcare business. Regulators have to ensure that these environments are safe, efficient and as clean as possible, as well as pleasant for the patients. It can be difficult to regulate the area however, because so many different items of equipment are needed to stock a typical hospital. When it comes to mobile gear, this can include the all-important hospital beds, or mobile monitoring stations and even IV drips.

How to Choose

Special nylon and rubber castors are usually fitted to all items of equipment found in a hospital or health care facility. These are typically chosen based on the degree of manoeuvrability needed, or the weight being carried.

Nylon Workhorse

The nylon castor is stronger and is typically made to deal with the large potential for impact in a busy hospital. They can bear a considerable weight, have resistance to cleaning chemicals and have a low resistance to friction, so that they move readily. Any cuts to the surface of the wheel could store bacteria, which of course is a bad idea here. The wheel has to be able to manoeuvre in and out of confined spaces without scuffing the floor, or causing any damage that could compromise the area. When used to transport heavy equipment, they need to be able to move freely.

Rubber

For a typical hospital bed, administrators normally choose rubber castors. This is because they are somewhat softer and thus give the patient a more comfortable ride when they're being moved from one location to another. Nevertheless, they also have a degree of rolling resistance for an additional safety measure.

Additional Precautions

All castors in a healthcare environment are treated so that they are resistant to static. This is especially important where they are transporting highly sensitive equipment used by specialists.

Choosing Properly

If you're not sure which type of castor wheel is appropriate for specific items of equipment or situations, then have a word with manufacturers and distributors to determine your best course of action.
