Considerations to take when deciding whether to buy a new or an old grain trailer

Grain trailers are invaluable pieces of equipment for many farmers, as they work both for plantation and feeding. Without them you would have to do a lot more manual work, which is something most farmers already do enough of. When it comes to buying a grain trailer for your farm, there are a lot of things you need to think about to make sure you get the best type of vehicle available for your budget and needs. In order to achieve that, however, the most important decision you need to make is whether you want a brand new grain trailer, or a used one.

Equipment

Something that speaks for getting a new trailer is the features that have been developed for modern equipment that isn't included in older models. Newer models tend to have side windows, which means you don't have to climb on top of the trailer to see the load. This is a major advantage that older models tend to not have. Newer grain trailers can also be equipped with anti lock brakes, which makes the trailer safer to tow, as the risk for the trailer tipping over you from behind when you need to make a dead stop decreases significantly.

Design

Design is also something you should take into consideration when deciding if you want a brand new or a used trailer. Newer models can have a sleeker design that takes some weight off the trailer, making them easier to operate. Many modern trailers also have a narrower and steeper design internally than older models. This is an advantage as it gives the grain less opportunity to get stuck on welding seams and edges when gravity pulls it down. In general, you should be looking for a trailer with a smooth inside with as little edges as possible. This is more commonly found in newer trailers, but can be acquired in older models as well.

Price

What speaks for buying an older, used model is, however, the cheaper price. This can be the best option if you're handy and know how to repair old trailers. In that case, you can get a used grain trailer for a cheap price and then restore it to fit your needs perfectly. It's also possible for almost anyone to purchase extra equipment to an old trailer to upgrade its features. This will, however, add to the cost of buying a used trailer, which might make it simpler to buy a new trailer to begin with.
